Let's Learn...Sight Words

Dolch Sight Words

Learning to read is both exciting and tricky. Let's be honest, you're five - you come across the word READ. Is it read or read? Being able to confidently read the rest of the sentence helps put this into context.
Our Let's Learn...Sight Words Playdough Mats are comprised from the Dolch Sight Words List. We feel this list provides useful words our Little Cubs need to learn in order to be confident and successful readers, and writers.
dolch sight words
The Dolch Sight Words list is probably the most commonly used set of sight words, with good reason. Developed in the 1930s-40s by Educator Dr. Edward William Dolch whilst studying the most frequently occurring words in children’s books of that era, the list contains 220 “service words” divided into sets plus 95 high-frequency nouns. These words comprise 80% of the words you would find in a typical children’s book, therefore giving your child a huge head-start in the magical world of reading. Once a child knows these list of words, it makes reading much more fluent, because your child can then focus their attention on the remaining words.
The Dolch words are commonly divided into groups by grade level, ranging from pre primer sight words to third grade, with a separate list of nouns. The total number of Dolch Sight words is 315.

How they work

By sight words, we mean words that a child has practiced enough to be able to recognize the pattern of letters instantly in order to read them without segmenting and blending.
However, we believe when learning these words, children should absolutely listen out for the phonemes present in the word, count them, understand which grapheme represents that phoneme and use manipulatives to build the word. Having this strong understanding is what we believe truly gives children the best start in their reading and writing. This is why all our sight word playdough mats include a tub of playdough! Hands-on learning allows your Little Cub to explore new ideas and this type of learning engages both sides of the brain forming and expanding neural pathways!
